The Connexions Volunteer Mentoring Scheme

Role Purpose:
To help young people aged 13-19 years old to fulfil their potential, improving their skills and providing new opportunities.

Mentoring:

Mentoring is part of the Connexions Service. Voluntary mentors are recruited from a wide variety of backgrounds and are willing to devote regular time to supporting young people.

They:

Work on a one-to-one basis with young people aged 13-19 who may be facing a

     variety of problems

They offer appropriate help and support

They arrange meetings on a regular basis to develop a purposeful, open and

      trusting relationship

Qualities:

Ability to develop sound and trusting relationships with young people
Ability to communicate with young people in a flexible and non-judgmental way
To be genuine open and honest, and understand the importance of confidentiality
To be able to give regular time to the project
Experience of working with young people would be an advantage

All mentors will be given training before being matched with a young person.

Support will be available from the Mentoring Co-ordinator.

The Selection procedure:
Due to the nature of the work, there has to be some formality to recruitment and selection of mentors even though it is a voluntary activity. All volunteers will be asked to complete an application form, provide references and attend interviews.
