Help and support for all 13 to 19 year olds

Introduction to Connexions

How can the service help young people?

Connexions is the government's support service for all 13-19 year olds in England. It aims to provide advice, support and guidance across a range of issues and smooth the path into adulthood and working life.

How does it work?

The scheme brings together all the services and support that young people might need, including
  • Practical help on courses, education, and careers
  • Activities, such as sport, arts or volunteering
  • Advice and support on drugs, sexual health and homelessness

How is it accessed?

Connexions has local branches that are run under national guidelines.

For young people who require individual support there are Personal Advisers who will work with them on a one to one basis from various locations such as schools, colleges, drop-in and community centres.

Within Hertfordshire, Personal Advisers are based within:

  • Hertfordshire Careers Service
  • Hertfordshire County Council
  • Minority Ethnic Curriculum Support Service
  • Education, Training and Employment of Care Leavers
  • Youth Programmes
  • Youth Offending Team
  • Voluntary sector groups including:
    • Watford Council for Voluntary Service (CVS)
For young people who do not require on-going support but who would like access to information or advice on a range of different issues, Connexions offers a dedicated helpline service that is open sixteen hours per day, seven days a week called Connexions Direct.
