Youth Advocates in Hertfordshire

The Youth Advocate programme is part of the Hertfordshire Children’s Trust Partnership decision-making structure and exists to give young people a voice in decisions made by policy-makers across the county on matters affecting their lives. It also allows them to raise issues of importance to them.

The aim is to have Youth Advocates in each of the ten districts in Hertfordshire. Volunteers for the role can come from any background, and will be trained in how to consult with and represent their peers. All they need is the desire to make a difference to the lives of young people in their communities. Already there are over 50 young people aged between 13 and 19 who have achieved the AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance) accreditation in representing others.

Young people learn many skills and gain confidence during their time as Youth Advocates – and have fun doing so, attending events as diverse as workshops, county-wide music festivals and debates on topical issues. The post also lends additional weight to CVs and provides evidence of the ability to communicate well.

Youth Advocates vote to appoint two of their group to represent their district on the Hertfordshire Youth Shadow Board. This panel is made up of two Youth Shadow Board representatives per district, and its members’ role will be to bring critical issues and concerns of their peers to the attention of county decision makers. The Youth Shadow Board will in turn be represented on the Hertfordshire Children’s Trust Partnership Board, ensuring that the voice of young people is heard at the highest levels.
